Saudi Arabia’s Storied History of the Sedan

Of us who’ve traveled frequently within the GCC know that this region has a particular penchant for the motorcar. But, no country in the GCC has embraced the sedan quite like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In the sprawling GCC, you’d normally see the SUV dominating headlines; luxury brands fill the showrooms and hardy pickup trucks justify their demand as workhorses. Yet, underneath the more bombastic displays of machinery lies one fascinating insight: Saudi Arabia is the region’s most commanding sedan market.

When compared with its neighbors (namely the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman), Saudi motorists have consistently shown a deep affinity towards the humble four-door.

What drives this unique preference in KSA though?

The Market Sets the Pace

Many already know that Saudi Arabia is the largest automotive market in the GCC, accounting for well over half of all new vehicle sales in the region.

For OEMs, success in KSA often leads to success across many of its neighbors in turn. It’s a market where nascent strategy is tested before a larger rollout, and a substantial budget is allocated so that learnings from this part of the GCC can translate into insights for all others.

If we cast our sights a little broader, on a global scale, fleet demand creates a virtuous cycle as everything from government institutions to rental companies have relied on midsized sedans for more than a few decades.

In Saudi however, models like Toyota’s Camry & Corolla, Hyundai’s Sonata & Elantra, Nissan’s Altima & Sunny, Chevy’s Malibu, and Honda’s Accord have become household names. This is namely due to their durability as the years roll on and the comfort bestowed on those in for a long drive crosscountry.

In the past, even Chevrolet’s Caprice were a dime a dozen, and even as they discontinued, there weren’t exactly 1-to-1 replacements (buyers more or less moved to the Camry or the like).

Even when these vehicles end their line of duty, they then enter the used-car market; where again they prove that reliability and dependability are kingmakers in this category.

At least from the outside, it’s a cycle that very few other GCC markets can match.

Would it then be fair to say that geography still reigns supreme?

Distance Favours the Sedan

Saudi’s vast landscape makes long-distance travel an integral part of day-to-day life. Whether travelling between Riyadh and Dammam, Jeddah and Madinah, or even commuting across sprawling metropolitan areas, motorists more than appreciate cars that stay quiet (and composed) at rapid highway speeds. This could be one reason midsize sedans continue to excel in the region.

So then, why didn’t the hatchback ever become mainstream in Saudi Arabia? Unlike in Europe or Asia, Saudi just didn’t need small city cars. With their wide roads, more-than-generous ample parking, and given the GCC, an abundance of highly affordable fuel meant buyers could comfortably step into larger vehicles without sacrificing practicality.

When customers were faced with the choice between a compact hatchback and a spacious sedan at relatively the same pricepoint, the sedan almost always won. What then happens when SUVs enter the fray?

SUVs Entered the Game

Today, crossovers and SUVs are reshaping virtually every automotive market in the Gulf. Yet Saudi’s journey rings a little different.

Elsewhere in the GCC, many buyers graduated from hatchbacks to SUVs. But in Saudi Arabia, they graduated from sedans to SUVs. This subtle difference explains why sedans continue to command significant market share even as SUV sales surge.

The way we see it, Saudi has never been your ordinary GCC market.

Everything from vehicle allocations, engine choices, pricing structures and marketing campaigns mostly begin with Saudi Arabia before extending across neighboring countries.

Even as electrification starts their foray into the industry, and SUVs continue their road to domination, one fact remains unchanged. No other country in the Gulf retains a relationship to the sedan quite like KSA. And, while tomorrow’s roads may soon be filled with electric crossovers and intelligent mobility solutions, the influences granted to us by the sedan will always be a defining chapter in the Middle Eastern motoring lore.

New Competition from China

While legacy brands dominate, the biggest story over the last five years has been the rapid rise of Chinese sedans. They are winning customers by offering larger vehicles with premium technology at prices that often undercut Japanese and Korean rivals, making Saudi Arabia one of the GCC’s most important battlegrounds for the next generation of sedan buyers.
